Felt F95 2012 – Save £162.50

The Felt F95 is the entry level road bike for this prestigious American bike company.  When I think ‘entry level’ I always assume a bike will be heavy, slow, or badly finished but the Felt F95 is none of these things. “Strong. Light. Cheap. Pick Two.”  was a famous aphorism of famous cycle engineer Keith Bontrager, but he hadn’t been seen this deal on the Felt F95 at under £500!

Strong – The Felt F95 has a beautifully finished custom 6061 F-light butted smooth welded aluminium frame.  6061 aluminium has a lengthy history of providing strong and reliable bike frames, as have Felt.

Light – The Felt F95 frame weighs less than 1.4 kilos and the whole bike weight is around the 9 kilo mark. If you look at most bikes at under £750 you’ll notice that many complete bikes are 1 kilo heavier than the Felt F95 and most are nearer 2 kilo’s heavier.  If you live in Holland you probably won’t notice the difference but if you’re keen on getting up hills fast, this kind of weight difference will certainly be noticeable.

Cheap – I know you can get a cheaper bike from your local supermarket but, even at full price, the Felt F95 is a bargain for a road bike of this quality. At under £500 it’s ridiculously cheap, but it certainly doesn’t look it!

I’ve had a Felt F95 myself and only sold it because it was slightly too small for me.  I was astounded by the way the bike looked and the quality of the finishing and the paint job.  The pictures you see on the internet really don’t so this bike justice.  If you get the chance to have a look at one in the flesh then you’ll see what I mean.

There were also some other great touches about the bike.  One think you can do is to ‘trim’ the front dérailleur from the micro-switch levers to remove chain rub when using the smallest rear cogs with the small front cog.  This kind of attention to detail is what makes the Felt F95 such an impressive entry level road bike.  Felt obviously know that once they’ve got you, you’ll want to continue buying their bikes for the rest of your life!

I know I’m always finding steel framed road bikes (because I love them) but this Felt F4130 is an absolute beauty.  It’s not just the gorgeous 4130 cromoly tubing frame, although it’s fabulous, but the incredible specification of the components.  Make no mistake, the Felt F4130 is fantastic value at full price, but at a little over £700 it’s ridiculous.  Try finding any sub-£1000 bike with Shimano 105 drive-train and you’re already looking at compromises elsewhere.  I’ve been looking for compromises on the Felt F4130 and I’m really struggling to find any.  It has a performance carbon fork, 105 front and rear derailleur, and most amazingly of all – a BB30 bottom bracket!

Now, I will be honest here, I’m not entirely sure what a BB30 bottom bracket is but I know it’s a relatively new design of bracket found mostly on performance bike costing the thick end of £2000.  It is absolutely clear that the Felt F4130 is built for light-weight speed and performance.  You know it’s going to fly!  Fast and classy, but far more repairable than a carbon bike, far cheaper than a carbon bike, far less nickable than a carbon bike, far more comfortable than an aluminium bike….  and you wonder why you see so many steel bikes on these pages.  Not many like the Felt F4130 though.

I’ll stop going on about it now.

I’m off to the garage to clean up my three current bikes so I can sell them all and buy one of these.  Not joking.  Save a 56 cm one for me.

How Much?

£719.40 – reduced from £1199 – not sure why Wiggle are doing it.  Maybe they’ve got lots. Hope so.

What Sizes?

All sizes seem to be available at the time of writing.

You won’t want this bike if…

You already have a dozen beautiful, fast, well specified steel road bikes….  and no room to squeeze in just one more.

You will want this bike if…

You appreciate beauty, style, quality and speed.  Felt road bikes are always fast.

Giant TCR Alliance Ltd 1 Road Bike | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com

The Giant TCR is one of the most highly respected of all the modern road bike designs, and to find the Alliance edition at half price is something of a surprise.  Finding such a great deal on a Giant TCR at this time of the year, when sales are normally so buoyant, is close to a miracle.

Giant TCR’s are fast road bikes, but also offer a high degree of comfort and smoothness of ride.  The TCR Alliance is so called because it represents an ‘alliance’ of carbon fibre and light-weight alloy with a frame which combines the two.  The idea is that, in the Giant TCR Alliance frame, you get the stiffness and value of aluminum where it is best suited, and the comfort and lightness of carbon fibre where it makes most difference.  The result is the best of both worlds and all at an affordable price.  By affordable I mean £1500 which is still something of a bargain for such a fast road bike with Shimano 105 drive-train and excellent overall components, but at £750 for this package the current deal on the Giant TCR Alliance can scarcely be believed.

It sounds clever but does this marriage of two different frame materials actually work?  I’ve scouring the Internet and every reference I’ve found to the TCR Alliance is very positive about the performance and smoothness of the ride.  While having a fast and aggressive riding position, the Alliance is seen as ideal for longer rides as well a the short races because of the wonderful smoothness of the ride.  Fast, comfortable and an absolute bargain?  All three of these (and that’s unusual!).

How Much?

£750 – reduced from £1500 – don’t get many reductions of this size at this time of year.

What Sizes?

Various versions available including a compact chain-set but most of the are in the medium / medium large sizes.

Speed scares you.

You will want this bike if…

Felt TK4130 Retro Track Fixed Gear Bike – Save £350

Felt TK4130 Retro Track Fixed Gear Bike - Save £350

Felt TK4130 Retro Track Fixed Gear Bike - Save £350

Wiggle | Felt TK4130 Track Bike 2011 Track Bikes

I’ve really had to deliberate over the inclusion of the Felt TK4130 on the bike sale blog. It’s not that the half-price deal doesn’t represent an absolute bargain, or that the Felt TK4130 isn’t a beautiful and appealing bike made by a great company to exacting standards.  It’s just that you have to be…  well… and absolute nutter to ride it.  No freewheel so you’re riding fixed unless you buy a freewheel and, take it from me, riding fixed is good fun but bloody hard work.  If you are going to ride fixed on the streets you’ll probably find the 15 tooth rear wheel is pretty hard work unless you live in Holland.  Perfect for the track though…. except this is a retro steel bike and, although weighing in at under 10 kilo’s, I can’t see Victoria Pembleton riding one.

Yes – nearly forgot to mention it – the Felt K4130 has no brakes!  Not really a problem unless you’re one of these strangely sane people who occasionally wants to slow down or stop.  As the TK4130 is a fixed gear you can, of course, lock the back wheel by stopping pedaling but this does take a little practice (and fairly strong legs). Practicing playing the guitar can lead to a few bum notes and sore fingers while you get the hang of it. Practicing stopping a bike can be a little more scary.  You should probably find a car park.

Who will want the Felt TK4130 then?  Well, I want one and I can’t be the only one.  It’s beautiful and cool and totally impractical, as all the best things in life are.

How Much?

£350 – reduced from £700 – you could hang it on your wall and it would make a great value work of art.

What Sizes?

Available in all sizes – maybe Felt overestimated the number of nutters.

You won’t want this bike if…

You’ve got no experience of fixed gear bikes, or if you need to commute 25 miles a day in a hilly area, or if you’ve basically got any sense.

You will want this bike if…

You believe that beauty is more important than practicality and you’re a bit daft… in a good way.

Charge Duster 2011 Mid Bike Sale - Save £480

Wow! Posted this back in January when Evans cycles had a couple of these but they sold out quickly, but now they’re back!  A guy in our office bought on the first time around and it’s and incredibly light and attractive (if rather brightly coloured) steel mountain bike.  It was a bargain before at £799 but now Wiggle are offering it at £719.  They must be mad.  This was my assessment 1st time around and I love the bike even more having seen one in the flesh. The extra £80 off the January price makes the Charge Duster mid 2011 even more appealing.

Got to go to work now so will write some more on this later, but such a good sale price on this beautiful Charge Duster 2011 that I had to post it immediately!  The Charge Duster is a wonderful steel mountain bike at an unbelievable price.

OK – I’ve got a bit more time now to talk about the Charge Duster.  Charge are a British company who have recently been producing some fantastic steel bikes.  Probably their most famous is the Charge Plug which is a single speed road bike, but they’ve also been producing mountain bikes and urban bikes. A workmate of mine has a Charge Juicer which is a beautiful steel framed road bike with a lovely black steel frame.

Now why would you want a steel framed mountain bike when everyone has alluminium or carbon fibre?  You may have noticed that the Charge Duster isn’t the first steel framed mountain bike I’ve championed on Bike Sale Blog as I’ve also fallen in love with the Commencal Ramones Crmo steel bike. Am I just an old fashioned romantic? Well yes and no. When I look at the skinny steel tubing on the frame of the Charge Duster it certainly pleases my heart more than any alloy or carbon fiber frame, but there are practical reasons that steel please the head as well as the heart- it also please the bottom and the wrists!  Steel frames are more compliant than alloy and will offer a greater amount of comfort on lengthy rides than alluminium.  They also have a wonderful spring to them that makes them feel alive. If you’ve saved up you hard earned cash for carbon fiber, but are planning on doing some hard riding, you should consider that steel is less brittle and easier to repair than carbon fiber in the event of you taking a tumble.  The Charge Duster will please the eye and the heart.

Check out the views of someone says it’s the best bike they’ve ever owned:

And then pick one up form Wiggle at the stupid price of £719:

Specialized Langster 2011 Bike Sale - Save £150

I’ve got a Specialized Langster (the 2008 model) and it’s been a fantastic bike.  I’ve used the Specialized Langster for year-round commuting, the coast-to-coast trip, a 100 mile daily ride from Lancaster to York and a hill climb.  I won’t say it’s always been the perfect bike in all of these circumstances but it’s always fantastic fun! The Specialized Langster is a single speed or fixed bike on a lightweight alluminium road frame and is surely one of the lightest bikes this side of £1000. The lightness of the Specialized Langster makes it a perfect introduction to single speed cycling as you’ll fly up hills you’d otherwise crawl up – even without the luxury of gears.  I currently use my Langster to commute in the summer and a Ridgeback Voyage to do the same trip in the winter.  The Specialized Langster is 10 % faster that the 24 gear touring bike and 10 times more enjoyable. I got mine in a sale for about £350 and it’s definitely the best bike bargain I’ve ever owned.  The Specialized Langster is available in both steel and alluminium frame guises and both have 30 % off at the moment. Can’t believe that this 2011 model is being discounted so heavily and is available in most sized (steel version only available in large frame). This is a pretty special bike sale:

PK Ripper Fixed 2010 Special Edition Bike Sale - Save £400

I first saw an advert for the PK Ripper Fixed in ‘Bicycle Buyer’ back in the summer of 2010.  It looked fantastic, and one of the most exciting fixed gear bike I  had seen.  A special edition in orange with just 1500 units worldwide, the PK Ripper Fixed was a dream fixed gear bike but with price tag to match. A fixed gear bike at under 10 kilos, the PK Ripper Fixed will provide you with everything from a striking, low maintenance commuter, winter trainer, right through to a stunt riders street machine. A fixed gear allows you to cycle backwards, stop without using your brakes and generally cycle in a manner you wouldn’t have dreamed was possible.  The lack of gears is also a great way to train and condition your legs, and is surprisingly easy to get to get the hang of and get yourself up even the steepest hills.  I cycled the coast-to-coast on a fixed gear bike without ever pushing (but with quite a bit of stopping and weaving!) so trust me on this.  This 2010 PK Ripper Fixed represents a fantastic bike sale moment!

Wow! Could the Scott Sub 10 Solution be the perfect winter and wet weather commuter bike?  It has the wonderful Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub gear which means no messy derailleurs to keep clean.  The alfine hub on the Scott Sub 10 is completely enclosed and maintenance free.  If that isn’t enough it also means you can change gear when you’re stopped at traffic lights so no need to desperately crash down the gears when a light changes to red on you.

You also get disc breaks and eyelets for fitting mudguards and yet the weight is under 12 Kilos (which is 2.5 Kilos less than my touring bike).  The light weight combines with the 700 wheels make the Scott Sub a fast commuter as well as practical. Can’t argue with the striking looks either!
